New Hope has been a supporter of Laytonsville Havens since they opened their
doors. This shelter for homeless women provides not only a safe
home, but the guidance and tools necessary for the residents
to regain their independence. We currently give them monthly
financial assistance for the purchase of medications for the
residents. We also contribute clothing, household items for residents
in transition to independent housing, provide special gifts for
the holidays, and have had several congregational work days at
their facilities.
On April
7, New Hope was honored by the Montgomery County Coalition for
the Homeless at their annual awards event, "Celebrating
Partnerships." We received a plaque presented by Sharan
London, Executive Director of the Coalition and Michael Subin,
President of the Montgomery County Council. We were cited for
our continuing commitment to the Laytonsville Havens homeless
shelter for women. Sharan mentioned our contributions for medications,
our congregational work days at the Havens, our Christmas caroling
and the many gifts we have given to the residents. She noted
the longevity of our relationship with the shelter and how much
we did for the size of our church, family.
Adrianne's Havens is a shelter for homeless men that operates under
the same Safe Havens guidelines as Laytonsville Havens. We provided
building materials and labor to help them get the shelter ready
to open their doors, and assist them regularly with clothing
and holiday gifts.
Our youth Sunday School classes prepare bag
lunches once a month for the Emergency and Severe Weather Shelter
in Rockville. This men's shelter provides an overnight refuge
from the streets, and sends the men off in the morning with a
lunch. Our 'assembly line' makes quick work of putting together
up to 80 lunches, which are delivered to the shelter after worship.
We also collect travel and sample size toiletries for their use.
