Olney is one of the fastest growing communities in Maryland. Just a few years ago, this small suburb of Washington D.C. had a population of around 20,000. With the completion of the Washington Metro subway system and with the general growth in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area, Olney has rapidly grown. Yet Olney is successful in maintaining much of its old-time character while growing into a modern community.
A nearby historic community is the town of Brookeville, MD. Just a few minutes north of Olney, Brookeville was the capital of the United States for a day when President James Madison in 1814 fled Washington D.C. and the attacking British in the war of 1812. While the British burned Washington, DC, President Madison ran the business of government from Brookeville. This sleepy community has many historic homes and landmarks.
A high growth area not far from Olney is the Northern Virginia suburbs. The "Dulles corridor" (named for the highway between the Washington Beltway (Route 495) and Dulles airport) has become the "Silicon Valley" of the east. Such prominent companies as AOL, MCI Worldcom, UU-Net and a host of large "dot-com" companies have their corporate headquarters in the corridor.
