WE ARE NEW HOPE

You will come as a guest,
but you will leave as family.

WHO WE ARE

New Hope Presbyterian Church is a small community of faith that shines its light from the top of a hill that all might see the glory of God. Our community of thoughtful, humorous, and service minded Christians is located in Derwood, Maryland. We are a wonderfully diverse group, deeply committed to the Good News of Jesus Christ. We offer a welcoming invitation to all people to join us for any of our gathering activities, not exclusive of worship or community service. We embrace God’s wonderful mosaic creation and the uniqueness of each person’s life and spiritual journey.  We are a welcoming witness to the love of Jesus Christ for all people of every race, ethnicity, age, gender, sexual orientation, physical ability, and ideology and theology that represents the love of God offered to all people.  New Hope provides a safe space to fully express one’s faith, to engage in safe conversations, to fellowship in a community of love, and to learn more about God made known through the scriptures and the ministry of Jesus Christ. We’re passionate about people and providing them a place to have a life-changing experience through prayer, word, worship, outreach and community development.

OUR CALLING

  • To be a multicultural “come as you are” body of Christ, known by its welcoming spirit, acts of love and compassion, service to community, and worship that glorifies God.
  • To be a life-changing ministry reflecting the love and the glory of God through worship, outreach, discipleship and servant-hood.
  • To be a living image of God’s diverse creation, practicing love, and actively embracing the truth that all humanity is created in the image of God and is of holy and equal value with gifts to share with the world.

OUR VISION

New Hope Presbyterians devote their lives to Christ, support each other, and actively serve people in need.

OUR MISSION

As a thriving Christian community, we follow Jesus’ commandment to love one another. Through worship, fellowship and service we inspire others to join us in eliminating hunger and homelessness. In our journey, we invite all people to know and share the peace of Christ.

Jesus said to him, “You shall love the Lord Your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and first commandment. And second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

Matthew 22: 37-39

WE ARE A PC(USA) CHURCH

The Presbyterian Church (USA) numbers 2.3 million members in all 50 states and Puerto Rico. The church includes over 11,000 congregations and conducts ministry in over 170 districts called Presbyteries. As a Protestant church of the Reformed tradition, we believe that all members of the church are called into ministry and service.

Some of the principles articulated by John Calvin are still at the core of Presbyterian beliefs. Among these are the sovereignty of God, the authority of Scripture, justification by grace through faith, and the priesthood of all believers. What these tenets mean is that God is the supreme authority throughout the universe. Our knowledge of God and God’s purpose for humanity comes from the Bible, particularly what is revealed in the New Testament through the life of Jesus Christ. Our salvation (justification) through Jesus is God’s generous gift to us and not the result of our own accomplishments. It is everyone’s job — ministers and laypeople alike — to share this Good News with the whole world. That is also why the Presbyterian church is governed at all levels by a combination of clergy and laity, men and women alike.
