The children of New Hope are actively involved in our mission work. A favorite activity is making sandwiches to pack in lunches for a Men’s Emergency Shelter.
The children of New Hope
collect dollars and cans of soup on Super Bowl Sunday as part of Souper Bowl of Caring, a national youth project to combat hunger. The collect money is used to purchase boxes of cereal for the local Men’s Emergency Shelter and the cans of soup are donated to the Olney Help food pantry.
We have an annual school supply drive, and provide over thirty filled backpacks to social workers at Montgomery County Child Welfare Services for distribution to local children in need. Other supplies are given directly to families and elementary schools in our community where the need is great as each new school year approaches.
Our annual Tree of Stars project is another way that every member of our congregation participates. We decorate a Christmas tree with stars, each listing a gift for someone on our long list of recipients. The wrapped gifts are returned to the church on the Sunday before Christmas, when they are presented by the children and blessed during our worship service. What a sight to behold as they are brought, one by one, to the front of the sanctuary. It is a true testament to the power of the Advent season.
Each April, we join Rebuilding Together of Montgomery County in their annual one-day home repair project, providing volunteers and funds. Each group performs designated repairs to the home of a county resident who is unable to afford the work that is much needed.
Our numerous local projects also include partnership with: Interfaith Works of Montgomery County, Montgomery County Coalition for the Homeless, Olney Help food pantry, Habitat for Humanity of Montgomery County, Adopt-a-Social Worker program, Children’s Defense Fund, and Washington Youth Foundation. We provide financial and volunteer support to these organizations and their many programs that benefit the less fortunate in our communities.
Fundraising Activities
Various mission fundraising activities are held throughout the year. Our Tad Marsh Memorial Golf tournament is held each spring. The proceeds from the tournament help to support our numerous mission projects.
